Show Notes

Today I’m chatting to Greta Solomon, who is a writing coach who specialises in helping people to fully express themselves. At the time this goes live, her new book Heart, Sass and Soul has just been published – I’ve started reading it and I love it. I am a huge fan of journalling so I was keen to talk to her about this, and we also ended up talking about mindset blocks to creativity, getting into a state of flow, healing old wounds, being honest and vulnerable in our work, being a highly sensitive introvert, and how journalling has helped her move forward behind the scenes of her own business. She has a really kind approach to writing and creativity that I hope everyone can benefit from, especially if you don’t consider yourself to be a writer.

“My journal was a place for me to get guidance where I didn’t have any outside guidance. To trust myself, to ask questions, to map out where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do” – Greta Solomon

Some of the things we talked about:

  • What it means to write for creative self-expression (vs. journalling as we understand it)
  • Greta’s advice for anyone who finds it difficult to journal or express themselves freely
  • Why bad grammar is not the problem when it comes to writing, but we can often be shamed into thinking it is
  • The layers of communication: the body, the mind, the soul and the voice
  • Some example creative writing exercises to help clear your creative blocks (useful for non-writers too!)
  • Greta’s walking and writing practice (I love this idea!)
  • What it means to live creatively and how creativity can infuse all parts of life
  • How writing and journalling can give you the awareness to heal old wounds
  • How everything Greta does in her business “begins in the journal”
  • Being an introvert, a highly sensitive person, and being vulnerable in your work
  • How Greta felt putting herself out there as part of a crowdfunding campaign for her latest book

“For me I’m choosing to share myself through this work to help other people to also share themselves and feel good about themselves. But there is always this push/pull between the two things, between hiding and being seen. And that is always going to be there. It’s just how I’m wired.” – Greta Solomon
